Full View of Mary HuddyeMary Huddye, a brass rubbing, artist unknown, 1589. Before Internet photos of Brass memorials made effective use for costume research, brass rubbings of those same memorials were taken instead for study. This woman is wearing a bongrace draped or attached to the top of her headdress, which may or may not be a French hood (the book states it is a French hood). Her garments are not the most fashionable, so she is probably of the gentry or merchant class. Image from: Ribeiro, Aileen & Valerie Cumming, The Visual History of Costume, B.T.
