François I and his court

Frontispiece of François I and his court. Discours de Ciceron. Illuminated by unknown artist. French, 1531-1538.

"Francis I, surrounded by his court, receives Anne de Montmorency. ... However, in Nicole Reynaud's opinion, the royal arms decorating the upper windows, the sceptre (rather than a marshal's baton) held by the main character, as well as a certain likeness to Francis I, indicate that the character is the King."
